BANGOR, Maine — Hundreds of American Legion members from throughout Maine are in Bangor this weekend for their 94th annual convention, which began on Friday and runs through Sunday.

The Department of Maine’s three-day gathering, which is taking place at the Bangor Civic Center, includes organizational resolutions, meetings, award presentations as well as presentations to charities and programs that the American Legion supports.

Among the speakers is Secretary of State and U.S. Senate candidate Charlie Summers. He also is a public affairs officer for the Navy Reserve, which he joined in 1996.

During his visit to Bangor on Saturday, Summers plans to speak about the battle military men and women face as they come home bearing the scars of battle, what he and others around Maine are doing to help veterans and other veteran initiatives.

All legionnaires are encouraged to attend this convention to voice opinions and express their vote to determine the future of the American Legion in Maine.

The installation of newly elected officers for the Department of Maine is set for 7 p.m. Saturday and will be followed by dancing.

Plans for Sunday include a memorial service at 8:30 a.m., after which both the legion and auxiliary will hold department executive committee meetings.
