AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine Department of Labor says the state’s unemployment rate ticked up two-tenths of a percent last month to 7.4 percent.
The rate is up from 7.2 percent in April, but down from 7.7 percent in May of last year.
The state says the number of people working in Maine is relatively unchanged. The increase in the unemployment rate is because more people are looking for work.
Nationally, the U.S. unemployment rate for May was 8.2 percent.
The unemployment rate for the six New England states averaged 6.8 percent. Vermont had the lowest rate at 4.6 percent while Rhode Island had the highest at 11 percent.
