Two celebrities have weighed in with endorsements in Maine’s U.S. Senate campaign, with former wrestler and Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura throwing his support to former Gov. Angus King and the Amazing Kreskin, described as “the world’s foremost mentalist,” supporting independent candidate Steve Woods.

Jesse Ventura, who served as governor of Minnesota from 1999 to 2003, said Wednesday he’s behind King in an interview with Politico. Ventura was discussing his new book, “Democrips and Rebloodlicans.”

“When Gov. King makes it to the Senate — and I sure hope he does — in Maine, we’ll have one honest voice out there,” Ventura told the political news website.

Ventura and King served concurrently as the only two independent governors in the United States during the late 1990s and early 2000s. King served as Maine’s governor from 1995 to 2003.

“I’m gratified that a guy who calls them as he sees them sees me as a good addition to the Senate,” King said.

The Amazing Kreskin, who became popular as a TV star in the 1970s, announced his endorsement of Woods through Twitter on Monday and with a press release on Thursday. Woods is chairman of the Yarmouth Town Council, president and CEO of Falmouth-based TideSmart Global marketing firm and part owner of the Maine Red Claws basketball team.

“Let’s face it: Our government needs a team spirit, the kind that Steve Woods will bring to the table,” Kreskin said in his statement.

The announcement is the first of Kreskin’s career, he says, but it is not a prediction. Kreskin, born George Joseph Kresge, has become famous for predicting the outcome of presidential elections. He has left his prediction for the 2012 election a secret and in the hands of late night talk show host Jimmy Fallon.

The Amazing Kreskin, in his statement, said Woods has “the credentials of being an extremely successful business leader and a true statesman.”

Woods worked for Kreskin from 1979 to 1981 as his tour and road manager, according to Kreskin’s website.
