NEWPORT, Maine — Next year’s budget for Regional School Unit 19 passed by just 166 votes on Tuesday.

Superintendent William Braun announced Wednesday that the $23,324,293 budget for the 2012-2013 school year passed 776-610 among the eight towns that make up RSU 19.

Five of those towns voted down the budget. Plymouth turned it down 52-46, along with Palmyra, 75-70; St. Albans, 88-83; Etna, 48-46; and Hartland 95-82.

Newport residents approved the budget 180-115, as did Dixmont, 98-41, and Corinna, 171-96.

The budget represents a 3.2 percent increase over last year, Braun said. It’s a total increase of 4 percent over the past four years.

“It was as low as we could get it and still provide a quality education,” Braun said.
