Older whites in general tend to be less favorable to more government programs, except Social Security, a significant change from their views in the late 1980s.

Are you so sure its not ILLEGAL immigrants and not just every immigrants of a different ethnicity boomers object to. From my point of view the more the merrier, just be legal about it.

So, I applaud your attitude. However, take a walk around Lewiston. Talk to the white, multi Maine generational, and see what they have to say about the Samali immigration that has happened.  You will find many more upset people than “more the merrier” people. Many more…

  • Yawningattrolls

Wow – quite an article of reverse discrimination and stereotyping ; keep on trashing the “cranky old white” people and toss them out the window with the laundry…….. they are people too.

  • You simply don’t get it liberal Dave.

The baby boomers saw (early) the error of continued population growth. They were restrained in their own procreation, and because of that the government (for which there are never enough people) opened the flood gates and allowed the cheaper foreign labor. The government also was not to concerned about the issue of illegal immigration.

There are too many people. The quality of life in the USA is declining and the reason for that is over population and the increasing demands that causes for the environment. We (300million plus of us) use too much energy, build on too many acres of land, and divert too many gallons of water.

I”m not a “baby-boomer (having been born in the 1970’s) but I’m cranky about the fact that we’re loosing our civility, our open spaces and our farmland.

“Yet a Pew Research Center survey published in November showed only 23 percent of baby boomers regard the country’s growing population of immigrants as a change for the better. Forty-three percent saw it as a change for the worse. Almost half of white boomers said the growing number of newcomers from other countries represented a threat to traditional U.S. customs and values.”

What a disgusting outlook to have. Diversity is one of the reasons why this country is the greatest on earth.

I think that research is tainted unless they become a little more forthcoming on how  they asked the question.  Notice the author decided NOT to link us to the study.

      • Anonymous

Sounds like you’re trying to sweep it under the rug. What difference would illegal vs. legal make in threatening “customs and values”? That refers directly to other cultures and ethnic backgrounds — not the legal status of an individual.

        • Anonymous

We don’t know that for certain that was the determination of the PEW study now do we. We have no idea how they formed the question. We do know that was the interpretation of this writer.  What we do know is that anywhere from 8 to 12 million people are here illegally devouring resources. We do know that a large part of our government doesn’t seem to care.  I don’t care if they came from Norway, some place downunder or China.  Get in line like everyone else.

          • Anonymous

That was the question itself, so yes, we do know.

    •  Diversity is overplayed, and over sold.  This country is great because it had open lands, resources, and people with the ability to create and meet challenges.  People who arrive (illegally) today are not coming to create they are running away from the problems in their birth countries.  That is a problem.

More leftist claptrap attempting to conflate illegal immigration with legal immigration.

You’d think by now that they would have bored themselves to death with this tired, old meme.

No intellectual curiosity as to why blacks and hispanics, a reliable bloc of the Dem constituency, are trapped in segregated and ineffective school systems.  No musing about the possibility that the deliberate balkanization of the country by Dems, teaches’s union fierce resistance to charter schools and accountability standards for their members and the encouragement of an entitlement mentality contributes one whit to problems in these communities.

Nope, it’s all that fault of those cranky old white people who are born racists.

Honestly… I don’t know where you get “leftist” out of an article that’s reporting on a research study. If anyone in this country wants lots of immigrants – legal or not – it’s the business interests who have set about destroying labor in the country. More immigrants = cheap labor = more profits and none of that pesky union stuff where people demand a decent wage for a decent day’s work. And guess what? More right wing “claptrap,” which goes… get plenty of illegals in because employers don’t even have to think about paying for basics like health care or retirement. These nefarious business interests, pandered to by the right wing radicals, simply off load such expenses onto us, the taxpayers, left/right/center. When Democrats then attempt to get some help to these folks who are exploited by the predatory classes, the Dems are accused of actually wanting more and more immigration. As to charter schools… you mean the privatization of the public school system Stop using euphemisms. Anyway, it’s not the schools, it’s parents not raising their kids to value education. There are plenty of phenomenal public schools. But you can’t have a good school without a good student body and deep parental involvement. You can privatize every school and destroy every teachers’ union you want. It won’t make kids smart till parents spend hours overseeing their kids’ education.

Congratulations, you’ve managed to touch on just about every tired liberal talking point.

You forgot the Republicans’ “war on illegal immigrant women,” though.

    • Anonymous

PS… under Obama, dramatically fewer illegal immigrants and more illegals returned to their homelands in 3 years than under 8 years of Bush W. Get some facts straight.

      • Anonymous

I don’t suppose that fewer illegal immigrants would be a result of failed economic policies and hence fewer jobs available for illegals  under Obama, right?

Oh, and did you know that the Obama administration has redefined the deportation of illegals to include turning them back at the border before they even enter?

Liberals – stealing the language since – well – forever.

That’s because Mexico’s economy is in better shape than ours!

        • Anonymous

wages are rising in Mexicoand unemployment around 4 % last I understand.
I heard that the Cartels were have trouble finding enough thugs.

I’m old and white, and, yes, getting crankier especially about ILLEGAL immigrants.  Come in through the FRONT door and then once you are here, don’t expect me to pay for your housing, your kids, your healthcare, your groceries, and whatever else the government says you should have or want.  Oh, but since the federal government opposes any attempt to monitor or limit who votes, you can just show up and vote that I should support you.  There’s nothing left.  I’m already supporting too many domestically born layabouts.

The ones who seem to think paying for someone
who is here illegally are usually the ones who are
paying nothing to begin with. I loved the one from last year
who was interviewed through an interpreter because he wanted
the right to vote. He been in the country for a number of years,
wasn’t a citizen, moved to Maine from one of the central states,
had about 6 kids and still couldn’t speak English. All was asked
of him was why he shoud be able to vote…and to vote dem. Not one
question was asked as to WHY he couldn’t speak English
after all this time. WHY did he move to Maine. WHAT he was
doing for work. WHO was paying for his kid’s education. HOW
was he getting his housing. WHO was paying for his food, heat,
electric, medical. The cost of healthcare in Mass alone was in the
billions for one year. And this is ONE state. No one is against
    immmigration or immigrants…LEGAL immigrants.

Some interesting comments here.  As a boomer, a white male, and a lifelong Maine resident I have to wonder why anyone would be surprised.  This country was founded on immigration and continues to grow because of it.  Japan worked hard to limit immigration and is now paying the price as they get older and older as a country.  Immigration will be what sustains the US, and our social security system, going forward.  I for one welcome the diversity and the culture that comes with immigration.  The issue of legal versus illegal is a political argument.  What immigrants bring to this country is cultural.

    • Anonymous

Thats all well and good Steve. I revel in other cultures and make it a point to  go out of my way to meet folks from other cultures. Usually I can get a good meal out of it. :) The fact is illegal immigration is ILLEGAL.  Passing it off as just a political argument sounds like you are a Democratic politician trying to secure a few new voters. :)

Once again the facts are distorted by the misuse of a word. IMMIGRATION is good it is how we ALL got hereto begin with and what makes us the melting pot we are. on the other hand ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION is a problem. Those who enter the country illegally no matter how good there intentions may be have have started there life here by breaking the law and by that act will be stealing form every other person here legally as long as they remain. This is not a massive issue for Maine but go to the south east the hospitals are all closing every place is strained and many are breaking.

What every American was taught in school and every LEGAL immigrant learns in school is we above all are a nation of laws. Those who break the law are criminals. We have enough of those and do not need more.

At some point we have less old small mined people due to them ‘ageing out’ if you will – which will insure more open opinions of a younger more tolerant group of Americans who will not be old, white or cranky…..2045 is coming kids.
