WILTON, Maine — Two dogs and a cat perished in a house fire on Route 2 on Wednesday evening, Assistant Fire Chief Kyle Ellis said Thursday.
The cause was being investigated by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Homeowners Walter and Caryn Leighton came home shortly after 5 p.m. and discovered the fire, Ellis said. It had smoldered for some time, but the ranch-style house was tight enough that it ran out of oxygen, he said.
The Leightons felt the door and doorknob, which were warm, and may have slightly opened the door, smelled smoke and called 911, he said. They lost their three pets.
Most of the damage occurred in the living room but the house is unlivable due to the smoke damage.
The house is at 483 U.S. Route 2 east of Brown’s Auto Body and is insured, Ellis said. The American Red Cross was called to help the family, but Ellis was unsure what was done for them.
