Lobster marketing meetings set

ELLSWORTH, Maine — Maine’s Lobster Advisory Council has scheduled four meetings along the coast this month to solicit feedback about a plan to boost global demand for lobster.

The plan, according to council representatives, would include a target budget of $3 million that would be funded by lobster harvesters, dealers and processors. John Sauve, president of the Food and Wellness group and former director of the Wild Blueberry Association of North America, has been hired by the council to draft the plan.

“The objective is to adequately fund a strong generic marketing program for Maine lobster and drive up demand and impact price to the benefit of the entire industry,” Sauve said in a statement released this week by the council. “The Maine lobster industry needs more dedicated funds and a great plan for generic marketing.”

The meetings, each of which will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., are scheduled for:

• Tuesday, June 12, at the Log Cabin, 196 Main St. Yarmouth.

• Thursday, June 14, Oceanside High School auditorium, 400 Broadway, Rockland.

• Monday, June 18, University of Maine Machias, Science Room 102, Route 1, Machias.

• Tuesday, June 19, Ellsworth High School cafeteria, 299 State St., Ellsworth.

Members of the state’s lobster industry are strongly encouraged to attend the meetings to voice their opinions about the proposed marketing plan. Staff with Maine Department of Marine Resources will attend the meetings to observe and gather feedback about this industry-led effort.
