On June 14 Bangor will come together to honor the American Flag on Flag Day.

The 23rd annual Bangor Flag Day Celebration will be held at the Bangor Armory, 647 Main Street, at 6 p.m. According to organizer Judy Butler, the celebration will include live music from the Bangor Band, the Fine and Dandy Ladies Quartet, and entertainment from the Y Players. The event will also include “patriotic speeches”, tributes to the men and women in the armed forces and local fire fighters and police officers. In addition, Butler said, there will be a flag folding ceremony with a description of what each fold means.

“This [celebration] is a way to show tribute to the American flag and its history,” Butler said.

Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the United States flag during June 14, 1777 at the Second Continental Congress.

The first Bangor Flag Day ceremony came about when Butler was working for the U.S. Post Office at the Margaret Chase Smith Federal Building. Her grandmother and mother both touted the work of Margaret Chase Smith. When Butler approached her superiors about having a ceremony to honor the flag on flag day, she was surprised by how supportive they, and the community, were. And Smith was instrumental in making the event happen as well.

22 years later at age 76, Butler still organizes the event. She hopes that her work will inspire others to take on the honored task of honoring the flag each year.
