BANGOR, Maine — A Bangor man faces multiple charges after he allegedly assaulted a neighbor and later got involved in a scuffle with a city police officer Tuesday.
The series of incidents that led to the arrest of 33-year-old Joshua Woodbury began about 3 p.m., when police were called to Woodbury’s Union Street apartment to look into a complaint that he had assaulted a fellow tenant, Bangor police Lt. Steve Hunt said Wednesday.
Woodbury, however, refused to come to his door, despite several attempts to get him to come out, Hunt said, citing an arrest report. Woodbury’s demeanor was described as belligerent and disorderly. Police decided to try again later, Hunt said.
About 11 p.m. that night, Bangor police Officer Taylor Bagley spotted the suspect walking down a nearby city street and stopped to serve him a summons for the alleged assault of his neighbor.
Woodbury reportedly became combative and aggressive toward the officer, who pepper-sprayed Woodbury in an attempt to subdue him. That failed, and Woodbury engaged Bagley in a physical scuffle, according to the arrest report.
Bangor police Officer Mike Brennan, who arrived at the scene shortly afterward, managed to subdue Woodbury after using a Taser on him, Hunt said.
Woodbury, who remained at Penobscot County Jail Wednesday night, is charged with refusing to submit to arrest or detention and disorderly conduct for his tussle with city police, Hunt said.
He also is facing assault and disorderly conduct charges in connection with the incidents at his apartment building earlier in the day.
According to a court listing in the Bangor Daily News archives, Woodbury was sentenced last year to a week in jail for driving without a license and fined $1,000 and given a 15-day jail sentence and three-year license suspension for driving while under influence of intoxicants.
The previous year, he was sentenced to six months in jail for assault, and given a 30-day jail sentence for obstructing the report of a crime, fined $350 for possession of drug paraphernalia and fined $350 for possessing marijuana.
