John Bapst student receives Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year Award, $7,500 scholarship

BANGOR, Maine — Student-athlete Mary Carmack of John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor is one of the recipients of the 2012 Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year Awards and a $7,500 scholarship.

Carmack, who is the 2012 valedictorian at John Bapst, competed on the school’s cross country, swim and outdoor track teams. She also received the Siemens Award for Advanced Placement in math, science and technology.

She has been captain of her cross country team for two of her four seasons, guiding her team to the Class B state championship in 2010.

Carmack is part of a group of 25 high school seniors selected by a panel of athlete Milk Mustache judges, including Chauncey Billups, Dara Torres and Tony Hawk, from more than 30,000 applicants across the country.

The judges helped select 25 winners who each will receive a $7,500 college scholarship, attend an awards ceremony at Walt Disney World and have an opportunity to appear in their own Milk Mustache ad.

One of the 25 student-athletes who best embodies the spirit of the Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year Awards, or SAMMY, will be named SAMMY MVP at the awards ceremony. Families, friends and fans will have the opportunity to vote for the SAMMY MVP by logging onto and casting their vote. The winning SAMMY scholar will have an additional $5,000 donated to an organization of their choice.
