Brunswick financier joins GrowSmart Maine as new treasurer

By Christopher Cousins, BDN Staff

BRUNSWICK, Maine — Joe Merrill of Brunswick has been elected to the GrowSmart Maine board of directors and will serve as its treasurer, according to the organization.

Merrill, who also works for The Nature Conservancy in Maine and Vermont, has been on GrowSmart’s finance committee since 2008. He has held several positions in finance and holds a BS in business administration from the University of Maine.

In a press release, Merrill said he is excited about his increased role with GrowSmart, particularly as the organization begins work on a major new initiative.

GrowSmart Maine, based in Portland, promotes quality of place and contributes to the public conversation about smart development through policy analysis, education initiatives and advocating for model development practices at the state and local levels. The organization, which teamed with the Brookings Institute to publish a wide-ranging and influential study in 2006 called “Charting Maine’s Future,” is embarking on a follow-up to that study, which is scheduled for release in October.
