BASS HARBOR – Frederick Leslie Thurston, 68, passed away May 31, 2012, at a Bangor hospital. He was born July 10, 1943, the son of Eugene S. and Helen M. (Swan) Thurston.

He attended school in Southwest Harbor. A skilled backhoe operator, he worked many years operating heavy equipment for local contractors including Billings & Hamblen, Doug Gott and John W. Goodwin Jr. Fred’s true passion in life was being out on the water fishing, whether it be lobster fishing out around the island or fishing with family and friends in the Allagash. He also enjoyed hunting on Gotts Island in the fall.

Fred is survived by sons, Frederick L. Thurston II and fiancee, Rosie Madeira, of Bernard and John C. Thurston and fiancee, Krista Graham, of Seal Cove; one stepson, Darrell J. Thurston of Southwest Harbor; and 11 grandchildren who he dearly loved and adored. In addition, he is survived by two brothers, James E. Thurston and Eugene S. Thurston; two sisters, Alice Berndtson and Linda Dow; one stepbrother, Royce Jordan; several nieces and nephews. He also is survived by special friends, Tanya Long, Patrick Hanley, and by his former wife and friend, Katharine Thurston. He was predeceased by his parents; and first wife, Jennifer (DeVisme).

A graveside service on Gotts Island will be held at a later date. Those who wish to remember Fred in a special way may make a contribution to Westside Food Pantry, P.O. Box 767, Southwest Harbor, ME 04679.
