Catell, Harris share first-round lead at Bunyan golf tourney

ORONO, Maine — Casey Catell and JJ Harris each recorded even-par 72s to share the first-round lead of the 48th Paul Bunyan Amateur Golf Tournament Saturday at Penobscot Valley Country Club.

Defending champ Ryan Gay is one shot back along with Brian Bilodeau while Ricky Jones, Mike Doran and Lance Bernier are two shots off the lead with 74s.

The A and B flights were held at PVCC Saturday and move to Kebo Valley Golf Club in Bar Harbor Sunday while the C and D flights will compete at PVCC Sunday.

During C and D flight competition Saturday at Kebo, Eric Fowle recorded the day’s best round with an 8-over par 78. He was followed by Bub Smith (79), Harry Orser (80), Bill Annas (81), and John Gubelman (81).

Catell recorded four birdies, 10 pars and four bogeys to gain a share of the lead with Harris, who notched three birdies, 12 pars and three bogeys.
