Scuba divers hold underwater cleanup off Portland beach

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — You’ve heard of beach cleanups. Now, a dozen scuba divers are scouring the ocean floor off of a Portland beach in search of trash and debris.

The city and the Roddenberry Dive Team are hosting what’s being billed as a Splash for Trash event at East End Beach on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Scuba divers will dive off the beach and bring up trash and debris from the ocean bottom.

A Portland dive ship, Barclay’s Skindivers Paradise, will give out prizes for the best “catch” of the day.
