BRIDGEWATER – Stephen Ivan Upton Sr., 75, died May 31, 2012, at his home. He was born Oct. 9, 1936, in Mars Hill, the eldest son of Vivian and Ivan Upton.
He graduated from Bridgewater Classical Academy in 1954. A member of the Bridgewater track team, Stephen won the 50 and 100 yard dashes, earning State Championships for both, claiming the title "Fastest Man in the State" two years running. Stephen served honorably in the U.S. Navy as a gunners mate second class petty officer onboard the USS Macon and USS Newport News from 1954 to 1959. Working for Lane Construction Co. Stephen was employed for 39 years, retiring in 2003. During this time holding a boiler technician license and Union membership of the International Union of Operating Engineers No. 4. Again at work in 2006, Stephen became the town of Bridgewater’s sanitation compactors attendant, and was honored by the town for his service of six years on Jan. 31, 2012.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Marlene; daughter, Lori and Gary Michaud and children, Beth, Amy and Andrew; son, Stephen and wife, Chantal, and children, Alex and Olivia; son, Mark and Julie and children, Emma, Owen and Paige; and son, Matthew and Erin and children, Benjamin and Emily. He is expecting a great-granddaughter in September. Stephen is also survived by siblings, Charles and Ida, Wayne and Debbie, Patsy and Dale Thibodeau, Dianne and Tom Berry, and Max; many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. June 7 at Smiths Cemetery, Route 1, Bridgewater, with Pastor Lawrence Beals officiating. Family and friends are invited to attend.
