OTTAWA, Ontario — A severed human foot mailed to the headquarters of Canada’s Conservative Party and another body part later discovered at an Ottawa mail facility were sent from Montreal, police said Wednesday.
Police discovered the severed foot after a receptionist opened a bloodstained box at the headquarters of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s party on Tuesday.
Police said the package was addressed to the Conservative Party of Canada and not to a specific person. Harper’s office is not located at party headquarters.
Police said late Tuesday they had intercepted a second suspicious package at a postal facility containing another human body part. Police didn’t release any details. Canada Post wouldn’t comment on the two discoveries.
Ottawa police said they were consulting with counterparts in Montreal after police there discovered a severed torso in a suitcase Tuesday. Daniel Fortier of the Montreal Police said the torso belonged to a male.
But they could not establish a link between the body parts and the torso, which was found in a heap of garbage.
“For the moment we cannot confirm any link with the body parts found in the Ottawa region,” Fortier said.
He said it was possible an autopsy, expected shortly, could provide such a link but that “for the moment, this is not possible.”
In Ottawa, political staffers were keeping a nervous eye on the mail.
“It’s very upsetting,” Opposition New Democrat member Yvon Godin said.
“It could be just one crazy person that did it, but at the same time we have lots of people unhappy in our country, the way the country is going.”
Opposition Liberal member Justin Trudeau called the packages horrific.
