PORTLAND, Maine – The president of Hannaford Bros. Co. was scheduled Wednesday to receive the 2012 Hon. Edmund S. Muskie Access to Justice Award.

Beth Newlands Campbell has supported many initiatives that promote equality and well-being, according to a press release issued Wednesday by Pine Tree Legal Assistance.

The award is presented annually to recognize individuals in the community who demonstrate a strong commitment to the public good, the press release said. Campbell’s work has included:

• Raising funds for nearly 40 charities, including several legal services programs, as chairwoman of the United Way of Greater Portland’s 2008 campaign.

• Working with the Preble Street homeless shelter last year to access a special federal hunger relief fund that helped more than 12,000 of Maine’s most-needy families.

In addition, Hannaford’s legal team and many executives have been active supporters of the legal services community in Maine, making their corporate expertise available to both legal aid boards and fundraising efforts.

The award was to be presented at the 17th Muskie Access to Justice

dinner at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland. Sponsored by the Muskie Fund for Legal Services, the event raises money for civil legal assistance to elderly and low-income Mainers.

Proceeds from the dinner are used to support the work of the

Cumberland Legal Aid Clinic, Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project, Legal Services for the Elderly, Maine Equal Justice, Pine Tree Legal Assistance and the Volunteer Lawyers Project.

The Muskie Fund for Legal Services and the Muskie Access to Justice Award were created in 1995 to honor former U.S. Sen. Edmund Muskie’s lifelong commitment to justice for low-income and elderly Americans.
