PORTLAND, Maine — A Portland man is behind bars Tuesday after a burglary and sexual assault investigation led to his arrest, according to police.

Mohammed Mukhtar, 18, is facing charges of gross sexual assault and burglary after his arrest Monday morning, according to Portland police Lt. Gary Rogers.

Mukhtar allegedly entered a man’s apartment on High Street early Saturday morning, the lieutenant said.

“[Mukhtar] gained entry into the multi-unit apartment building through an open window,” said Rogers, who added Mukhtar was able to access the victim’s apartment through an unlocked door.

The victim awoke to Mukhtar assaulting him, according to Rogers, and the man confronted Mukhtar, who subsequently fled.

Mukhtar was taken to the Cumberland County Jail, where he remained Tuesday. The case remains under investigation, Rogers said.
