MACHIAS, Maine — The Bangor Daily News and the University of Maine at Machias this week launched a new community journalism internship for students enrolled in the UMM Arts and Letters division who have an interest in exploring careers in multimedia reporting.

One student each semester will spend 10 hours a week researching and writing news and feature stories and producing website content, working under the guidance of Tom Walsh, who covers Washington County for the BDN from a bureau in Machias. Walsh has taught journalism on the university level in both the United States and Ireland.

“This is a terrific professional opportunity for our students,” said Kay Kimball, associate professor of history and chairwoman of the Arts and Letters division. “They’ll not only learn the standards of journalism, but they will be able to draw on their diverse backgrounds in English, community studies, and related fields and employ them in a real-world context. Anything we can do to bring our students into a profession, and ask them to develop and apply skills within that perspective, benefits them enormously by better preparing them for the future.”

The new program’s summer term intern is Dan Barr, a student from California who is enrolled in UMM’s English and book arts program. In addition to his BDN internship this summer, Barr is reprinting, on letterpress, a short book from the early 20th century as well as writing fiction.
