Rock Cats snap Sea Dogs’ three-game winning streak

PORTLAND, Maine — The New Britain Rock Cats snapped the Portland Sea Dogs’ three-game winning streak with a 3-0 victory over the Sea Dogs at Hadlock Field Monday in front of 5,667 fans.

The Rock Cats (29-21) got on the scoreboard first in the third inning. Rene Tosoni doubled to Bryce Brentz in right field and was followed by an Aaron Hicks single. With runners on first and third, Chris Colabello hit a shot over the Maine Monster in left field to put the Rock Cats up 3-0.

The home run was Colabello’s fifth in five games at Hadlock field and upped his RBI total to 11 at Portland’s ballpark.

Brock Huntzinger entered the game for Chris Hernandez in the top of the seventh inning. Hernandez (2-4) finished his outing with two strikeouts and three walks while allowing three runs on six hits over six innings. Huntzinger threw three strong shutout innings in relief of Hernandez and recorded two strikeouts.

Portland tried to rally in the seventh when Dan Butler hit a leadoff single. Two batters later, Nick Natoli recorded his first hit in his Double-A debut. Derrik Gibson then drew a two-out walk to load the bases, but reliever Daniel Turpen stifled the rally by striking out Shannon Wilkerson.

Brett Jacobson (11th appearance) made his first start of the season for the Rock Cats because of David Bromberg’s promotion to Triple-A Rochester. Jacobson went four scoreless innings, giving up two hits. He also walked a batter and struck out one.

The Rock Cats pitching staff finished the afternoon with a combined shutout performance. The group effort included Jacobson, Blake Martin, Daniel Turpin and Caleb Thielbar. Martin received the win and is now 2-2.

An 11-game hitting streak by Portland’s Zach Gentile came to an end, dropping his batting average to .325.

The Sea Dogs (20-30) head on the road to kick off a lengthy stretch against Western Division opponents, starting with the Senators (27-22) in Harrisburg, Pa., at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Billy Buckner (3-3) is slated to start for the Sea Dogs against Harrisburg’s Rob Gilliam (1-5).
