STOCKTON SPRINGS, Maine — A man believed to have violently sexually assaulted a 61-year-old Stockton Springs woman in her home on May 8 is still at large.

The Waldo County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the attack and are actively tracking down all leads, Lt. Jason Trundy said Tuesday afternoon.

“We’re following up on the leads as they come in, but we’re running into some dead ends,” he said.

The woman told police after the assault that a man she did not know had rung the doorbell of her Church Street home that afternoon and said he had been a former tenant of the home. He said he had left some items on the back porch and asked if he could get them.

She let him in and started to lead him to the porch, when he assaulted her. Police said the victim may have become unconscious from the force of the attack.

“When she came to, he was gone,” Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton said in a press conference held a few days after the assault.

The woman was able to call for help and was taken to Waldo County General Hospital, where she was treated and released.

She described her attacker as a man between 35 and 45 years old and about six feet tall. He has dark hair, hazel eyes and a distinctive, anchor-shaped scar on the right side of his face.

He also has tattoos on the fingers of both hands, with the word “hate” possibly tattooed on his left fingers.

He was driving a blue car with a large white decal or emblem on the hood.

While police have received tips from both the public and from other law enforcement agencies, Trundy said most have focused on one element — the car or the facial scar — and none has led to the assailant.

He said that police detectives have been in contact with the victim, who was severely traumatized after being assaulted.

The state police crime lab is processing evidence, including DNA samples collected at the scene.

Anyone with information about the case can call the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office at 338-2040.
