Evan Graves, Meredith Freimer win Sugarloaf Marathon

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine — Evan Graves of Caribou and Meredith Freimer of Portland cruised to comfortable first-place men’s and women’s finishes in the 30th Sugarloaf Marathon on Sunday.

Graves beat his closest competitor by almost 10 minutes while Freimer had about a five-minute margin of victory.

Graves completed the 26.2 miles from Eustis to Kingfield in 2 hours, 33 minutes, 6.6 seconds while Freimer finished in 3:07:59.5.

Robert Ashby of Brunswick followed Graves down Routes 27 and 16 to notch a second-place finish of 2:43:00.5. Rounding out the top five were Randy MacDonald of Hampden (2:55:27.5); Tom Howard of Shawmee, Kan. (2:57:03); and Steven McCarthy of Greene (2:58:19.7).

Sarah Anderson of Newtonville, Mass., finished second in the women’s race with a 3:12:23.7 clocking. Rounding out the top five were Kristine Guaraldo of Brewer (3:13:48.7); Deborah Downs of Somerville, Mass. (3:19:21.7); and Diane Keenan of Wallingford, Conn. (3:19:32.6).

In the accompanying 15K road race, Judson Cake of Bar Harbor raced home to a first-place finish in the men’s race with a time of 47:47 while Marie-Caro Cote of Montreal won the women’s race in 59:20.2.

Rounding out the top five in the men’s race were Caleb Lander of Brewer (51:52.4); Nikolous Rempe of McPherson, Kan. (55:33.2); Sean Sullivan of Belmont, Mass. (56:25.5); and David Drew of Litchfield (57:19.1).

Rounding out the top five in the women’s race were: Mary Pardi of Falmouth (1:00:40,8); Christine Irish of North Yarmouth (1:00:52.9); Michelle Cook of Cumberland (1:01:04.1) and Amanda Benoit of Saco (1:04:09.2). Pardi, Irish and Cook were the overall 9, 10 and 11 finishers.
