ROCKLAND, Maine — A Knox County jury convicted two people Wednesday in connection with an incident in Warren last fall in which one of them tried to bite a police officer and grabbed for his gun.

The jury convicted Dalton Malmstrom II, 41, of Sanford of criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, and refusing to submit to arrest. Barbara A. Flaherty, 41, also of Sanford, was convicted of disorderly conduct and criminal mischief as a result of the same incident.

The two will be sentenced at a later time.

According to reports filed by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Malmstrom had telephoned state police dispatch on Oct. 2 from a residence in Warren to try to get the number for someone in California. He then told dispatch that if police came to where he was they should bring four or five officers.

When deputies arrived to determine what the problem was, Malmstrom, who was then on the phone with one of the deputies, said he would be coming out of the house with a plastic gun. The deputy advised him not to do that.

Flaherty screamed for police not to hurt Malmstrom and then smashed a window.

Malmstrom took a bottle and smashed it against his head and then put his head through a window, the police reports stated.

Officers handcuffed the pair. Malmstrom was placed in an ambulance to be treated for his cuts and evaluated. The handcuffs were removed briefly to have his hands in front so that the medical personnel could better treat him, but he then became more aggressive in the ambulance, according to the report. He lunged at a deputy, put his hand on the butt of the deputy’s gun, and then tried to bite the deputy. He later said he would spit on the officers.

Malmstrom told deputies that he had taken the synthetic drug bath salts two weeks earlier.

At the hospital, he had to be restrained, according to the police reports.

Malmstrom and Flaherty remain free on bail pending sentencing.
