ORONO, Maine — Chantel Charles of England has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Maine and join the women’s basketball squad in the fall of 2012, UMaine coach Richard Barron announced in a press release Thursday.

“I am delighted with Chantel’s choice to study and play at Maine,” said her club coach, Dan Bowmaker. “The family and I were all impressed with coach Barron’s character and his ambition for the program. I am confident that Chantel can be part of a very special journey for the entire Maine family.”

Charles, a 5-foot-10 guard from London, comes to Maine after representing England U-16 at both the 2009 and 2010 European Championships while also joining the U-18 squad for the 2011 Championships. Charles helped lead her Haringey Angels squad to the Sureshot Cup Final Championship as well as assisting the squad to the U-18 National League Play-Off Final Four. She was captain of the U-18 Angels.

In the U-16 Sureshot National Cup Final, Charles was named MVP after recording 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Charles also played for Barking Abbey in the EBL Division One for senior women, the highest level in the United Kingdom.

The eligibility of all student-athletes is contingent upon admission to the University of Maine and compliance with all NCAA rules, including registration with the NCAA Clearinghouse.

UMaine’s Fogel receives honor

UMaine freshman catcher EmJ Fogel has been named to the 2012 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division-I All-Northeast Region First Team.

Fogel led the team in a number of offensive categories including batting average (.331), runs scored (22), hits (47) and doubles (9) while driving in 14 runs. She ended the year with a .974 fielding percentage while calling the majority of Maine’s contests down the stretch.

Fogel previously was also named to the 2012 America East All-Conference Second Team.

The All-Region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, and all the honorees will now be eligible for selection to one of three 2012 NFCA Division I All-American teams. In addition, conference pitchers and players of the year not selected to the regional teams were added for All-America consideration.

The 2012 NFCA Division I All-America teams will be announced May 30 on NFCA.org.
