BANGOR, Maine — Employees at the Union Street Citgo noticed that their scrap metal pile was getting smaller. After checking the service station’s video surveillance camera system, they saw that a couple had raided the pile the previous four nights, Sgt. Paul Edwards said.
The couple, driving an SUV, had raided the pile each night at around 11:15 p.m., employees told police. To catch the thieves, an employee stayed at the shop after it closed Friday night and waited, prepared to alert police if they saw anything, Edwards said.
“At 11:15 p.m. this SUV pulls into the lot and they called,” the sergeant said. “We were waiting around the corner.”
Deja Daigle, 27, of Glenburn and Robert Niles, 30, of Kenduskeag took off but were caught shortly afterward on Ohio Street. Both were charged with four counts of theft by unauthorized taking and criminal attempt and were taken to the Penobscot County Jail. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)
