Bangor bakery Gavin’s Goodies makes decadent, visually appealing treats

By Emily Burnham, BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — Jennifer Lindsay was bitten by the baking bug early in life — elementary school, to be specific, when she started baking birthday cakes for her family, and made a map of the United States out of cake for a school project. Now, at age 26, she’s got her own bakery business, Gavin’s Goodies, in Bangor, located at 96 Center St., in the same building as Bangor Floral.

For the past two years, she has been making decadent, visually appealing cakes, cupcakes, cookies and candies for restaurants, weddings, birthdays and other special occasions, out of her certified home kitchen in Carmel.

Lindsay studied culinary arts at United Technology Center in Bangor while still in high school, and later attended the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco, where she specialized in fondant and sugar sculpture — edible art, the kind of stuff you see on TLC’s “Cake Boss” and other cooking shows. Lindsay has made everything from an Angry Birds-themed cake, to cakes shaped like guitars, sushi boats, firetrucks and alligators.

“I’ve always loved the creative side of baking,” said Lindsay. “Making cakes that have a theme or have sculpture-type things on it is really fun for me.”

Lindsay bakes her treats most days of the week out of her home kitchen, and then brings them to her Bangor business to decorate and display. She named her business after her 6-year-old son, Gavin, who was also the inspiration for a new development in Lindsay’s baking style.

“In late 2010, [Gavin] was diagnosed as being allergic to gluten, dairy and soy,” she said. “So I started experimenting … a lot of the stuff on the market just doesn’t taste very good, and for a little kid, that’s really hard. So now I have a full line of gluten-free, dairy-free products.”

A number of products, such as cookies, cake pops and cupcakes, are available for walk-in pickup, though flavors change daily. Cakes and other special orders are available by calling 852-1707 — and Lindsay welcomes creative ideas.
