FREEPORT, Maine — Transportation officials are celebrating the opening of two train platforms ahead of the expansion of passenger rail service in Maine.
Federal Railroad Administrator Joseph Szabo and Maine Transportation Commissioner David Bernhardt will be among those on hand Monday for ribbon-cutting ceremonies at newly constructed train platforms in Freeport and Brunswick.
A special train carrying state and federal officials and guests will travel to Freeport and Brunswick for the events.
The platforms will serve train riders when Amtrak’s Downeaster train service is extended to the two towns this fall.
The Downeaster now runs from Portland to Boston with stops in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
