LOUDON, N.H. — Skowhegan’s Mike Mason retook the lead from Scott Farrington of Minot with three laps remaining to win the 20-lap North East Mini Stock Tour opener at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Saturday.
Mason lost the lead on a restart with five laps to go after pacing the first 15 laps from the pole.
“I shifted to fifth instead of third,” said Mason of the restart, who earned his first career win on the tour. “That’s been my weak spot — missing shifts on restarts.”
It was the first race for the NEMST on the 1.6-mile, 12-turn road course. The series features four-cylinder stock cars. Twenty-eight of the 32 entrants started the race.
Mason said he had no previous road racing experience.
“It’s great. I didn’t think [my first series win] would come this soon, and I didn’t think it would come at the road course,” said Mason.
Farrington claimed second followed by John Kelly of New London, Conn., Shawn Swallow of Stark, N.H., and Mark Panaroni of Ivoryton, Conn.
