Augusta man arrested for reckless conduct after Wednesday accident

AUGUSTA, Maine — An Augusta man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after he forced his car into a ditch off Eastern Avenue with two toddlers in the back seat, according to police.

William Lee Austin, 24, is facing a charge of reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, a Class C felony, according to Augusta police Lt. Chris Reid.

Austin was taken to the Kennebec County Jail after the accident, where he remained Friday on $2,600 cash bail.

The crash took place around 4 p.m. Wednesday when Austin forced a vehicle driven by Carolyn McKechnie, 25, of Winthrop off the road. Austin was a passenger in the vehicle, and McKechnie’s children were riding in the back seat.

McKechnie and the children were taken to MaineGeneral Hospital for minor injuries. Austin faces up to five years in jail if convicted of the Class C felony.
