FORT KENT, Maine — Officials with an establishment that has five locations in Aroostook County announced Friday they are taking over outpatient physical therapy treatment of patients at Northern Maine Medical Center.

The transition to County Physical Therapy, which has locations in Houlton, Presque Isle, Caribou, Madawaska and Fort Kent, will begin over the next month.

Although the hospital is discontinuing its outpatient physical therapy practice, no personnel will be terminated as a direct result, according to Peter Sirois, interim CEO of NMMC. Sirois explained that some open positions had not been filled and some staffers are being transferred to other jobs internally.

Sirois noted that the agreement will allow the hospital to focus its attention and resources on core services.

In addition to a 49-bed hospital, NMMC also encompasses Forest Hill Rehab & Skilled Nursing Center, a 45-bed skilled nursing and rehab facility, and seven health centers located throughout the St. John Valley.

The outpatient services are offered at 104 Main St. in Fort Kent and at the Madawaska Outpatient Center.

“We will continue to offer full occupational and speech therapy, and we will continue to provide inpatient physical therapy at our hospital in Fort Kent and our Forest Hill Center,” said Sirois.

County Physical Therapy’s founder, Mark Rossignol, said that CPT also is pleased with the agreement.

“As our name suggests, physical therapy is our primary focus, and this allows us to have even more of an impact in the St. John Valley,” he said.

Both Sirois and Rossignol said the opportunity will improve the overall service experience for patients and providers.

The transition of patients from NMMC to CPT will begin immediately in Madawaska and by early June in Fort Kent. NMMC will cease operations at its Therapy Works building in Fort Kent and is negotiating with CPT about occupying that space.
