PORTLAND, Maine — The roads and sidewalks around Hadlock Field in Portland are getting an upgrade.

The Maine Department of Transportation told residents at an informational session Wednesday night that work on the $810,000 project is expected to begin after Labor Day and take about two months to complete.

Improvements include new pavement, better-defined crosswalks, fewer travel lanes and dedicated bicycle lanes.

Designers plan to start the work after Labor Day weekend to reduce the effect on Hadlock Field, home of the Portland Sea Dogs, the Boston Red Sox Double-A affiliate.

A design consultant says the work will improve safety.

The Portland Press Herald reported that not everyone was happy with the proposal, saying it would complicate traffic.
