ELLSWORTH – Olivia S. Moore, 102, passed away May 6, 2012, in Ellsworth. She was born Sept. 16, 1909, at the family’s Bayside Farm at Smith Cove on Cape Rosier, Brooksville, daughter of Edwin James and Bessie (Bakeman) Smith.

She grew up on the farm, the eighth of 11 children – eight girls and three boys. In her childhood they traveled by horse drawn vehicles and long trips were rare. The kids really did walk a long way to school every day. She graduated from Brooksville High School a year early and enrolled at Eastern State Normal School, joining her sister, Abby, at the school in Castine, just across the bay from the farm. After graduating from Eastern State in June 1927, at age 17, Olivia taught school for three years – two on Islesboro. Then she visited her sister, Betty, in New York City for a while, and upon returning home she and sister, Eva, Mrs. Roy P. Allen, traveled to Ellsworth, making a stop at Moore’s Drug Store. She met the owner’s son, John L. "Bill" Moore, who was smitten. She returned to New York, letters were exchanged and Bill and Olivia were married in New York City at Little Church Around the Corner on her 22nd birthday in 1931. They lived in Ellsworth, where Bill later owned Moore’s Drug Store with his brother, James, and sister, Margaret. Olivia loved cooking, operas, playing bridge and golfing. She made several holes-in-one. She enjoyed her winters in Delray Beach, Fla., and Boynton Beach, Fla., and summers in Maine. For several summers she took great pride at being the field boss on the family blueberry fields. Her apple and blueberry pies, as well as brownies and yeast rolls were legendary within the family.

She is survived by her four children, Mary Olivia and her husband, Douglas N. Smith, of Ellsworth, Jane Isabel Treworgy of Bangor, John L. and his wife, Judy Moore, of Ellsworth and Elizabeth S. and her husband, Gary McDeavitt, of Union Hall, Va.; eight grandchildren, who know her as Ollie, Douglas Smith Jr. and his wife, Teri Sargent Smith, of Ellsworth, Olivia J. Scott and her husband, Steven, of Punta Gorda, Fla., Nathaniel M. Smith and his wife, Diane, of East Blue Hill, Allison M. Moorwood and her husband, Andy, of Sunnyvale, Calif., John F. Treworgy of Bangor, Susan Treworgy of California, Jessica DaGrosa and her husband, Joseph, of Pinecrest, Fla., and Robert Aleck Moore and his wife, Reem, of Dublin; and 13 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, including the Kermit and Wayne Allen families, Monalee S. Pritchard of Iowa, Patricia G. Smith of Florida, Edward Coolidge and Barbara Moore Ameen of Ellsworth; several great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, John L. Moore; her parents, her 10 brothers and sisters, and all their spouses.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held in July, with an announcement made at a later date. Interment will be in the family plot at Woodbine Cemetery. Gifts in her memory may be sent to Ellsworth Public Library or to a charity of your choice in her name.
