SCARBOROUGH, Maine — An early-morning fire destroyed a three-car garage in Scarborough on Tuesday, but a large house beside it was spared.

Fire Chief Michael Thurlow said the call came in just before 1 a.m., and the homeowners were awakened by smoke alarms. By the time fire crews arrived, the garage was in flames.

Thurlow said the fire was venting through the roof, and although a lack of public hydrants challenged firefighters, crews were able to knock it down before it spread to the attached house.

“The crews did an outstanding job and were able to hold the fire from extending into the main house,” he said. “It could’ve been much worse.”

Crews from Scarborough, Old Orchard Beach, Buxton, Westbrook, South Portland and Cape Elizabeth responded. Thurow said the fire was under control within a couple hours, but crews remained on the scene until 6:30 a.m.

The garage and one car inside it were destroyed, while nobody was injured, Thurlow said. Authorities are investigating a cause.
