Montes Cafe in Bangor to serve breakfast, offer Fiore oils and vinegars

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. And now that Montes International Catering in Bangor is serving breakfast instead of dinner, you can get your morning going in gourmet style.

Arturo and Carmen Montes always wanted to offer breakfast at their Columbia Street cafe, but while they were raising three boys, they wanted to be able to have breakfast with them at home, before school.

“Having breakfast at the cafe just wasn’t an option, even though we had lots of customers ask for it,” said Carmen Montes. “But now that our boys are grown, it’s something we can do. And with Arturo on the coast in the afternoons in the summer, it just makes sense,” referring to her husband’s’ other position as executive chef at the Looking Glass Restaurant in Bar Harbor.

Some of the dishes offered for breakfast — served from 7 to 11 a.m., Monday-Friday — include the Montes family favorite, Migas, which are crisp chopped corn tortillas with roasted poblanos and feta cheese, scrambled with eggs and served with black beans, sour cream and homemade sofrito. There’s hearty fare like toasted homemade challah bread with Dijon marmalade, topped with simmered bitter greens, smoked gouda, smoked pork chop and eggs, and the Montes boys bagel sandwich — a grilled bagel with cream cheese and swiss cheese, thick crisp local bacon, grape jelly and an egg. Homemade crab cakes and a variety of eggs benedict styles will also be offered.

“It’s from scratch, it’s fresh, and it’s unique. It’s the kind of thing we’ve always done,” said Carmen Montes. “It’s the comfort food we raised our kids on.”

Also new at Montes is the addition of an olive oil and balsamic vinegar tasting bar, courtesy of Fiore Artisan Olive Oil & Vinegar, which has retail shops in Bar Harbor and Rockland. The Montes family has had a professional relationship with Pat and Nancy O’Brien of Fiore for several years now, so when the opportunity came to share some space, the two businesses jumped at the chance.

“We’ve used their products for a while, in our menu and in our salad dressings,” said Montes. “It’s really a perfect match. Our clientele really appreciates what they do. We’ll have four oils and four vinegars available here all the time, with two exclusive varieties that are only here in Bangor.”
