STATEWIDE — Coinciding with the conclusion of National Volunteer Week, April 15-21, Maine’s credit unions released a report of the results of volunteer efforts by Maine’s credit unions in 2011. The Maine Credit Union League coordinates a statewide tracking of volunteer time contributed by Maine credit union employees through its Credit Unions Share for ME program. In 2011, Maine’s credit unions volunteered a record-setting 35,008.5 hours, a 13 percent increase over 2010 totals, it was announced.

In 2011, credit unions in eastern, northern and Down East Maine participated, including University CU of Orono, which volunteered the most hours in 2011, Bangor FCU of Bangor, Changing Seasons FCU of Hampden, Down East CU of Baileyville, Maine Highlands FCU of Dexter, Maine Savings FCU of Hampden, NorState FCU of Madawaska, Penobscot County FCU of Old Town, Sebasticook Valley FCU of Pittsfield and The County FCU of Caribou.

The five credit unions contributing the most volunteer hours were University CU, 4,256 hours; Saco Valley CU, 3,485.50; Five County CU in Bath, 3,169.50; Rainbow FCU in Lewiston, 2,021; and Community CU in Lewiston, 1,492.50.

From Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2011, the number of hours volunteered by credit union staff and directors resulted in the highest total since the program began a decade ago. Since 2002, the program has documented more than 215,000 volunteer hours by credit union staff and directors.

Based on figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which calculates the value of one hour volunteered in Maine at $16.84, the value of the time volunteered by Maine’s credit unions equaled $590,000 in 2011.

According to the Maine Credit Union League, which coordinates the Program, more than 2,000 individuals, including credit union staff and board members, spent time volunteering in their communities last year. An average of 318 credit union staff and directors collectively volunteered nearly 3,000 hours each month in 2011.
