BANGOR, Maine — Bangor area residents will take to the streets in their communities on Saturday, May 19, for the annual AIDS Walk. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the walk starts at 10 a.m. at 370 Harlow St. The walk will follow a 3-mile route through the downtown Bangor area.
Organized by Eastern Maine AIDS Network, a community service of Penobscot Community Health Care, the AIDS Walk will raise funds and awareness for prevention programming and care for those living with HIV in Penobscot and Piscataquis counties.
Walkers will participate in teams or individually, and are seeking pledges for their efforts. This year, anyone can pledge as an individual or a team at maineaidsnetwork.com. Organizers said the event comes as agencies receive news of private and public funding losses for programming because of the poor economy.
More than 1,200 people in Maine are living with HIV, according the the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
