Police continue search for Pittsfield Rite Aid robber

PITTSFIELD, Maine — The search continues for a man who robbed the Rite Aid pharmacy on Somerset Avenue on Thursday evening.

Pittsfield police and personnel from the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department and the Maine State Police converged on the scene at about 7:30 p.m. Thursday. A state police tracking dog was requested.

The robber entered the pharmacy and demanded pills, Pittsfield police Sgt. Timothy Roussin said late Thursday night.

“No threat was made. No note was presented. He did not present a weapon,” Roussin said.

The robber is described as between 5 feet 7 inches and 5 feet 9 inches tall and 240-250 pounds. He was wearing a blue hooded “Maine” sweatshirt, a white baseball cap and dark blue or black athletic type pants, possibly sweatpants, Roussin said.

Pittsfield police Detective Michael Cote said the man demanded 20-, 30- and 80-milligram pills from the pharmacy.

“He took an undisclosed amount of narcotics,” Cote said Friday afternoon. “Rite Aid is still tallying [what he took].”

There are surveillance pictures of the robber and “a picture is forthcoming,” added Cote.

Thursday’s Rite Aid robbery was the second in six months at the same location.

In October of last year, the pharmacy was robbed by a man who reportedly got away with prescription drugs. In that case, the suspect entered the store wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, a tan baseball hat, sunglasses, black pants and black gloves and gave the pharmacist a note demanding prescription drugs and a bag, Roussin said at that time.

Though the robber in October did not claim to have a gun, the pharmacist told police he believed the man might be armed because of a bulge under his clothing and the manner in which he was behaving, Roussin said.

Cote said the man who committed Thursday evening’s robbery is believed to have headed north on Interstate 95.

Anyone with information about the robber or his whereabouts or saw anything in the area of the Rite Aid around 7:30 p.m. Thursday should leave a message for Pittsfield police Detective Michael Cote at 487-4439, ext. 206.
