Marty Bouchard, principal of Houlton High School, has announced the honor parts for the Class of 2012.
Cody P. Woods, son of Dr. Karl and Lisa Woods, has been named valedictorian for his class. He will attend Bowdoin College, majoring in biochemistry.
He is president of the National Honor Society and a Principal’s Award honor student. He attended Dirigo Boys’ State and has served as a member of the executive committee, secretary and treasurer of the Student Council. Woods is the recipient of the DAR Good Citizen Award and the Maine Principals Association Principal’s Award. He has served as secretary and treasurer of his class. He has attended Model State Youth in Government and has been part of the People to People Leadership Program. He also attended the New England Student Leadership Conference.
During his junior year, he received the Phi Beta Kappa award, the Excellence in English award, was an Academic Decathlon Medalist, received first place in the science fair and has been a four year recipient of the Rotary Club Achievement.
Woods has played varsity soccer, varsity basketball and varsity tennis and was named a Penobscot Valley Conference Scholar/Athlete. He has participated in the music program as a member of the band, Jazz Band, Symphonic Band and Percussion Ensemble.
Alana J. Smith, daughter of Alan and Gretchen Smith, has been named salutatorian for her class. She will attend the University of Vermont, majoring in neuroscience.
She is vice-president of the National Honor Society and a Principal’s Award honor student. She is the senior class vice president in charge of the senior trip. She is a member of the Academic Decathlon Team and was the team’s high scorer medalist for two years. She received the Bausch and Lomb Technology Award and was nominated for the Princeton Award.
Smith is the 2012 Rotary Youth Merit Award nominee and has received Rotary Club recognition for three years. She was named Student of the Month for excellence in math and science and was third place overall winner in the annual science fair for two years. She attended Dirigo Girls’ State, the Maine Youth Leadership program at University of Maine at Gorham and the Youth in Government program at the State House in Augusta. Smith has been a member of the band, Pep Band, the Symphonic Honors Band and McGill’s Community Band.
Valerie R. Jay, daughter of Raymond and Bettina Jay, has been named first honor essayist. She will attend the University of Maine at Presque Isle to train as a physical therapist assistant.
Jay is a Principal’s Award honor student and a member of the yearbook staff and photography club. Active in the music program, she is a member of the band, Symphonic Band, McGill’s Community Band, chorus and Chamber Chorus.
Brandon D. Clark, son of Dean and Tina Clark, has been named co-second honor essayist. He will attend New England School of Communication to prepare for a career in video production.
He is a member of the National Honor Society and a Principal’s Award honor student. He has been a member of the yearbook staff for three years and is involved in Beacon TV. Clark is involved in the music program, has been in the musical for six years, show choir for six years, All-Aroostook Chorus for four years and has participated in All-State Chorus. He has been a member of the Chamber Choir for three years and a Northern Star/Aroostook Idol participant for four years.
Zacharia M. Harvey, son of Dr. Bruce and Michelle Harvey, has been named co-second honor essayist. He will attend Full Sail University, majoring in recording arts and music production.
He is a member of the National Honor Society and a Principal’s Award honor student. He attended Dirigo Boys’ State and has served as class officer for three years, and as class president his freshman and sophomore year. He is a four-year member of the Student Council and has played JV and varsity soccer, JV and varsity basketball and varsity tennis. A four-year member of chorus, he also is a four year member of the band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble, Chamber Choir, Show Choir, a four year member of the All-Aroostook Chorus and All-State Chorus and has participated in the school musical for six years.
