WATERVILLE, Maine — Police are searching for a man they say broke into a woman’s home and assaulted her over the weekend.

Waterville Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey said Tuesday an Elmhurst Street resident called police at 2:15 a.m. Saturday after a man allegedly forced his way into her home and assaulted her.

The victim told police the suspect claimed a male acquaintance of his was staying at the woman’s home, Rumsey said.

When the woman indicated that no man was in the house, the suspect pushed his way in and attacked her with his fists. He also was armed with a knife, according to Rumsey.

Rumsey said the woman was home alone at the time. She described the suspect as heavyset with a scruffy face and a white T-shirt.

The woman suffered minor injuries to her face but did not require medical treatment, Rumsey said.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Waterville police at 680-4700.
