BANGOR, Maine — Local police arrested a Newport man after they found him lying on the sidewalk and found drugs while searching him after he was arrested on outstanding warrants, Sgt. Paul Edwards said Monday morning.

Police received a call Sunday night reporting that a man who appeared to be intoxicated was leaning against a signpost on Ohio Street.

When Officer Chris Blanchard arrived about 9:30 p.m., he found Gary Prew, 49, of Newport lying on the sidewalk near the intersection of Ohio and Drummond streets, according to Edwards. Blanchard found that Prew had two warrants out for his arrest.

Edwards said he didn’t have information available on the warrants.

Police found Prew was carrying a syringe containing morphine, and jail officials found a pill believed to be Trazodone while searching his pockets, the sergeant said.

On top of the warrants, Prew now faces additional charges of possession of Schedule W and Schedule Z drugs.
