PORTLAND, Maine — A march and rally in Portland to draw attention to sexual violence in Maine will wind up with survivors of those crimes sharing their stories and experiences.
The 31st annual Take Back the Night March and Rally will take place on Friday in Monument Square. Accompanied by a police escort, marchers will walk from Monument Square, through the Old Port and back. When they return, survivors of sexual violence will be invited to share their stories.
Sexual Assault Response Services of Southern Maine, the sexual assault support center for York and Cumberland counties, is co-sponsoring the event with the Portland Police Department.
The Maine Crime Victimization Survey says nearly one in five Mainers will be the victim of sexual violence in their lifetime.
