FRIENDSHIP, Maine — The race for the House seat that represents four towns in the rural part of Knox County will be a three-way contest.

Jeffrey Evangelos of Friendship filed papers this week with the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices to seek the Maine House District 49 seat. The seat represents Warren, Union, Cushing and Friendship.

Evangelos is not enrolled in a political party. One Democrat — Shelby Chadwick of Warren — and one Republican — Robert Carter of Warren — also have filed for the seat that is being vacated by Republican Rep. Wes Richardson of Warren. Richardson was barred from running for a fifth consecutive term because of the state’s term limits law.

Evangelos, a graduate of the University of Maine at Orono, was the business administrator for SAD 40 for 15 years. He founded and operated Central Asian Artifacts for 15 years until he retired last year.

The candidate said he agrees with U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, that the two-party system is broken and he feels he can bring people together.
