Two Bangor triathlons this weekend

BANGOR, Maine — Two triathlons will be held in Bangor this weekend, one on Saturday at Husson University and one on Sunday to benefit the Bangor Y.

The Husson University triathlon begins at 10 a.m. Saturday with the swimming and running events to be held on campus and the 12-mile bike ride starting and ending there.

“The bike ride will start on Griffin Road, to Ohio Street, out Ohio to McCarty Road, then to Broadway, and Kenduskeag Avenue, and end at the Campus on Griffin Road,” Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said in a statement.

Riders are expected to be using the roads between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The Bangor Y’s triathlon will begin on Second Street at 8 a.m. Sunday with the swimming portion of the event. After that participants will grab their bikes and hit the streets.

“Bike riders will ride a 13-mile course from Second Street to Cedar Street, then to Main Street and go out Main Street through Hampden to the Coldbrook Road,” Edwards said. “The riders will go out Coldbrook to Odlin Road back to Bangor and turn onto Perry Road through the Industrial Park. The riders will come out Farm Road back to Main Street and go to Cedar Street, back to Second Street to finish.

“For the footrace, the final part of the triathlon, runners will go through several west side streets off main roads for 3.1 miles and finish at the Y,” Edwards said.

People should be cautious when driving in the area between 8 and 11 a.m., the sergeant said.

Second Street will be closed to through traffic to allow a safe start and finish and a large congregation of athletes and supporters.
