AUGUSTA, Maine — A Sheriff’s Department captain is leading a search for descendants of the only Kennebec County sheriff’s deputy to die in the line of duty.
Capt. Daniel Davies said he wants to honor Sgt. Thomas Malloy, who died in 1884, by formally recognizing surviving family members. Davies said it’s a way to say thank you.
What little Davies has been able to learn about Malloy comes mostly from the Oct. 10, 1884, edition of the Kennebec Journal of Augusta.
It says Malloy was shot near the Soldiers Home, the forerunner of the VA Maine Healthcare Systems in Togus. The area was rife with brothels, bars and gambling that catered to veterans at the home.
The sheriff at the time sent Malloy and his partner there to crack down on the liquor business.
