BELFAST, Maine β€” Police arrested a man for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend earlier this week after neighbors called authorities to report they had seen him screaming at her and hitting her.

Dakota Sanford, 18, who police say has been living with his girlfriend in a tent behind the Penobscot Trailer Park on R.W. MacLeod Lane in Belfast, denied the charges when officers came to investigate Tuesday morning.

His girlfriend denied the charges, too, according to the report from the Belfast Police Department. But after officers spoke with the witnesses, they arrested Sanford and charged him with domestic violence assault. They then re-interviewed the girlfriend and saw that there were marks on her neck, which apparently had been made when Sanford pulled on her shirt as she was trying to leave.

β€œHe was pulling on her shirt so hard it was choking her,” said Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham.

Sanford was arraigned Wednesday, with bail set at $250 cash. He remained in custody Thursday morning, according to an official at the Waldo County Jail.
