ROCKLAND, Maine — A Washington man has filed a lawsuit against Wal-Mart, claiming he suffered permanent injuries from a fall at its Rockland store.

The lawsuit on behalf of Edward Billings was filed April 17 in Knox County Superior Court.

The lawsuit claims that Billings was walking down an aisle at the store in April 2009 and tripped over a long sign with a metal frame that was on the floor. Billings suffered serious injuries to his knee and tore cartilage and ligaments, the lawsuit stated.

Billings claims the store’s negligence led to his injuries.

Billings is represented by attorney Michael Bigos of Lewiston.

Greg Rossiter, a Wal-Mart spokesman, said while he does not have details on the lawsuit, Wal-Mart places the security and safety of its customers as a top priority. He said Wal-Mart makes sure its stores are clean and safe.
