BRUNSWICK — Shawn Smith’s three-run double highlighted a four-run eighth inning Tuesday afternoon that lifted Husson University of Bangor to a 7-4 baseball victory over Bowdoin College.
Kyle Vanidestine knocked in five runs for the Eagles, while Jake Arthers contributed two singles and two RBIs. Brandon Gendreau and Cody McInnis each singled twice to back relief winner Dennis O’Neil, who allowed six hits and two runs in four innings.
Luke Regan singled three times and plated a run for Bowdoin College. Dan Findley socked two doubles and Tim McGarry doubled and singled. Reliever Jay Loughlin took the loss.
UMass Boston 7, USM 5
At Waltham, Mass., the Beacons scored five runs in the third inning on their way to victory.
Mark McCormack tripled and singled, Nick Grassetti doubled and singled and Matt Consiglio singled twice, posting an RBI apiece, to lead UMass Boston (16-11, 5-3 Little East Conference).
Tucker White tripled, singled and knocked in three runs to propel the University of Southern Maine of Gorham (14-13, 5-3 LEC). Forrest Chadwhick contributed two singles and two RBIs to back starter and loser Dustin Stanton.
UMF, Thomas split
At Farmington, Jack Macvane and Ethan Jean delivered run-scoring singles in the fifth inning to provide the Beavers with the margin of victory in a 4-3 second-game win over the Terriers.
Thomas beat the University of Maine-Farmington 16-5 in Game 1 of the North East Athletic Conference doubleheader.
In the nightcap, Casey Ashey pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to help the Beavers (6-21, 5-12 NEAC) prevail. Macvane added another RBI single and Brett Wallingford added two singles and an RBI to back winner Joe Sullivan.
Rob Nutter (RBI) and Cody Vigue each poked two singles for Thomas College of Waterville (21-10, 16-2 NEAC).
In Game 1, Taylor Livingston plated three runs with two singles to spark the Terriers’ 18-hit onslaught.
Jeff Richardson tallied two doubles and a single with two RBIs, while Ben Goodall hit a two-run homer and a single and Ethan Hurley singled twice with two RBIs. Chris Farrar allowed four hits and two runs in six innings.
Zach Keene singled twice and Dale Winchenbach hit a two-run double for the Beavers.
Bates sweeps USM
At Lewiston, four Bobcat pitchers combined to allow only two runs as Bates College swept the University of Southern Maine of Gorham.
Bates won the opener 11-1 and took the nightcap 8-1.
In Game 1, AnnaMarie Martino belted a home run and two singles with two RBIs to lead the Bobcats (12-6), who scored seven runs in the first inning.
Kelly McManus doubled and singled with an RBI and Karen Ullmann added two singles while Lauren Dobish hit a two-run homer behind starter and winner Kristen Finn.
Katie Davis collected a double and two singles with an RBI for the Huskies (3-25). Meghan Rumore doubled and singled.
In Game 2, Martino singled three times to head the Bates attack behind starter Kelsey Freedman, who allowed three hits and a run in five innings. Courtney Talcott had two singles and two RBIs and Dobish doubled and singled.
Meghan Craffer hit two singles for USM.
Bowdoin sweeps UM-Farmington
At Farmington, Nancy Walker fired a three-hitter, striking out four and walking three, and Gen Barlow drove in five runs with a grand slam and a sacrifice fly as Bowdoin triumphed 9-1 in the nightcap after posting a 13-5 victory in the opener.
Casey Correa had three hits, including a double, for the 22-10 winners and Hillary Smyth and Caroline Dewar had two hits each.
Shannon Mitchell and Christine Tovey doubled for 10-14 UMF.
In the opener, Cielle Collins had three singles and three RBIs for Bowdoin and Hanna Wurgaft tripled and doubled and knocked in two runs.
Correa, Amy Hackett and Toni DaCampo had two hits each for Bowdoin and Correa had two RBIs.
Tovey doubled and singled and drove in two runs for UMF. Mitchell and Meaghan Donnell each singled twice, Amy Jones homered and Jillian Withee had a hit and two RBIs.
