ELLSWORTH, Maine — A Penobscot man is facing criminal charges after allegedly crashing his vehicle while driving under the influence and then leaving the scene of the accident.

Joseph McGraw, 39, was driving on North Penobscot Road in Penobscot on Sunday evening when he apparently rolled his Jeep. But McGraw no longer was at the scene by the time Hancock County Sheriff’s Deputy Larry Fickett arrived, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.

Fickett later found McGraw at his home, where McGraw told the deputy that he had crashed while attempting to avoid a turkey in the road but that he had no memory of events after the crash. McGraw suffered a head injury in the crash.

McGraw was summoned for operating under the influence and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident. He was taken to Blue Hill Memorial Hospital for treatment.
