OLD TOWN, Maine — A Greenbush man is in county jail on a probation hold Monday after what began over the weekend as a routine traffic stop.

Adam Belyea, 30, reportedly was driving along West Old Town Road about 2 p.m. Saturday when Old Town police Officer Lee Miller noticed that Belyea’s vehicle lacked a valid inspection sticker, Old Town police Sgt. Scott Casey said Monday.

When Miller pulled Belyea over, he determined that this was the case and charged him with the traffic offense, Casey said, citing a police report.

Belyea also was charged with sale and use of drug paraphernalia after an empty can allegedly used to smoke marijuana was found outside his car, Casey said. Casey said the can, which officers believe he tossed so it wouldn’t be found in his possession, had marijuana residue on it.

During the traffic stop, Belyea told officers he was on probation and his probation officer was contacted, Casey said. As of Monday night, Belyea remained at Penobscot County Jail, where he was being held pending an appearance before a judge.

Belyea’s criminal history dates to at least early 2001, when at the age of 19 he was fined $100 for criminal trespass, according to a Presque Isle District Court listing.

In the fall of that year, Belyea was one of two people charged in connection with the armed holdup of Penobscot General Store in Waldo County, according to the Bangor Daily News archives.

After pleading guilty to the crime in May 2002, Belyea was sentenced to eight years in prison with all but 4½ years suspended, six years of probation and $1,000 in restitution. In June of 2008, however, Belyea was sentenced to 30 days in jail for robbery and his probation was partially revoked, according to a Waldo County Superior Court listing.

Most recently, Belyea, whose address was listed as Brewer, was fined $250 for theft by unauthorized taking or transfer.
