Fellowship of Christian Athletes to hold free Coaches Appreciation Breakfast

Posted April 14, 2012, at 5:33 p.m.

The Maine Chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes welcomes coaches from the college level right down through the youth ranks to participate in their free Coaches Appreciation Breakfast.

University of Maine football head coach Jack Cosgrove will be the keynote speaker at the event, which will be held from 8 to 9 a.m. Sunday, April 22, at Chili’s Restaurant on Stillwater Avenue in Bangor.

“He’s just speaking about his coaching experiences, what he’s learned,” said former Black Bears basketball player Amanda Tewksbury, the FCA’s Bangor area representative.

“We’re just doing this to encourage the coaches in the influence that they have,” she explained. “It’s just a way to get coaches in this area together. Briefly, at the end, we’ll talk about what we’re doing in the area with FCA.”

Chili’s is providing the breakfast buffet at no cost.

Tewksbury said there are only 40 seats available, so interested coaches are encouraged to sign up at mainefca.org or by emailing her at atewksbury@fca.org.

Maine FCA has been active in Greater Bangor, not only working with student-athletes on the UMaine campus, but sponsoring events such as free youth basketball clinics.

UMaine field hockey in action

While its season doesn’t start until August, the University of Maine field hockey team is busy this spring building toward the 2012 campaign.

Coach Josette Babineau’s Black Bears are playing regularly this month, including a visit Sunday to Amherst, Mass. There, UMaine will scrimmage against the universities of Massachusetts, Connecticut and Vermont, along with Syracuse University.

On April 22, the Bears travel to Durham, N.H., where the teams from the America East Conference are participating in a showcase. UMaine ends its spring season with an April 28 match at Harvard.

The Bears are coming off a 16-4 season during which they were ranked No. 13 in the country before losing to Boston University in the America East semifinals.

UMaine hockey plans fundraiser

The UMaine women’s ice hockey team invites fans to come out and eat to support the program.

The Black Bears will hold an All You Can Eat Wings Night Fundraiser from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 19, at the ACME Pizza and Wing Company, located at 296 Main St. in Old Town.

The event is $10 and includes a raffle, wing-eating contest and door prizes. All proceeds benefit UMaine women’s ice hockey.
